Sewing Initiative Brings Hope

Women and young girls living in refugee camps in Iraqi Kurdistan have seen more terror and violence than any person should ever see in a lifetime. Yet, there is always within the human heart capacity for hope, with a little encouragement and the right circumstances hope will grow and blossom. That is what Bring Hope Humanitarian Foundation (BHHF) seeks to provide through its newest sewing initiative.

The Kurdistan sewing initiative has begun with the help of three ex-pat women living in Dubai. BHHF arranged a site visit for purposes of implementing the sewing initiative. Theresa and Carla from the UK as well as Maria from the US reviewed start-up needs to begin the initiative in Baharka camp in Erbil beginning in October 2016. These generous women have experience with such a project in Gatiantep Turkey where the success they had inspired not only the refugees they worked with but themselves as well.

Seeing the joy and hope such initiatives bring to people is such an inspiration for the soul and so these women together with other volunteers will begin the sewing initiative with hopes of expanding the project to the other 45 refugee camps throughout Kurdistan as soon as possible. BHHF has gathered half a load of fabric and textiles and 30 sewing machines for the initial start-up. Many more textiles/fabrics/sewing machines and sewing supplies will be needed for expansion.

Currently, young refugee girls spend most of their time in the tents with little hope and no real activities to occupy their minds. This most vulnerable group needs hope, support and belief that there is a future beyond the daily dredges of the refugee camp. It is the goal of this sewing initiative to provide a means to these vulnerable young women and parents so hope and goals can be re-established. Where doing something for themselves, that brings joy and creates distraction from sorrow, grief and war may also create the seeds of hope that the future can hold bright new starts and even happiness.

Everyone can bring hope

BHHF’s primary objective of humanitarian aid is to save lives, alleviate suffering, as well as to give the most vulnerable group (displaced children) hope for the future. BHHF has provided humanitarian aid with short-term and long-term help to homeless refugees, victims of natural disasters, wars and famines, and poor people.
