Enabling Children to Participate in School for a Better Future
Living in a refugee camp is challenging in many ways. Getting access to proper health care, basic aid and even access to proper education are just one of many extra struggles people have to face.
All children have the right to education and a safe space where dreaming about the future is encouraged and will be nurtured. Fortunately there are camps that offer schooling but a lot of children can’t attend due to the fact that they don’t meet the studying requirements because they don’t have a suitable place to read, do their homework, study or even have a bag to hold their books and pencils.
Our team visited the Baharka camp that hosts displaced and orphaned children and brought 52 DESKIT’s with them for distribution. The DESKIT is a compact waterproof school bag that can be transformed into a little desk adjustable in two different heights. These DESKIT’s are made by women in India who are being trained to make the DESKIT school bags. In collaboration with FlyDubai we were able to get these DESKIT’s to Erbil.
This amazing product means that on one side children are being able to go to school and are able to study properly which will affect their future greatly and on the other side it creates employment opportunities for women who otherwise won’t have an income and are now able to provide for their families.
After the distribution our team talked to the children (aged 6-10), their guardians and the camp authorities and the feedback was overwhelming. Giving these children a chance to study, learn, read and participate fully in school activities means everything and will open up the world to them.
We hope to provide many more children with DESKIT’s in the future and bring them humanity and hope.
